In 2021, SIBUR's Board of Directors approved the Circular Economy and Climate Impact Reduction Policy. The document sets out the main principles, strategic goals and objectives of SIBUR in these areas.
Facilitate recycling of at least 100 kt of polymer waste annually as part of our own investment projects and joint projects with our partners;
Ensure the production of at least 250 kt of low-carbon products and products containing recycled or bio-feedstock.
Our business model envisages recycling of oil and gas by-products, which used to be flared and thus contributed to an increase in CO2 emissions. SIBUR recycles associated petroleum gas to make modern materials and reduce GHG emissions. SIBUR’s petrochemical products have high recyclability, which enables the company to embrace circular economy principles.
The Company plans to expand its ESG product range and divert sizeable amounts of recycled materials into reuse. We are confident that novel green products are the future of the petrochemical industry. In 2021, SIBUR presented its innovative Vivilen brand
SIBUR takes part in the development of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). Our goal is to make circular economy projects attractive and profitable from an investment perspective.
We encourage consumer demand for green products and solutions and monitor the recycling of our products.
Plastic has great recyclability. To unlock its potential, SIBUR promotes polymer recycling and nurtures a waste management culture amongst the public and its partners.
SIBUR’s R&D effort is focused on developing and rolling out new products based on circular economy principles. The Company's investment and R&D are centred around its aspirations to develop polymer waste recycling technologies, create and market innovative polymer materials, low-carbon solutions and technologies to harness carbon dioxide.
SIBUR is promoting responsible waste management both directly and through its partners. By implementing internal and partner projects, we raise awareness among our suppliers, contractors, and the public around sustainable development and transition to circular economy.
The Vivilen polymer materials are unique, as they combine high-quality primary feedstock and recycled plastic, which accounts for at least 25% of the end product. The formula was developed by the SIBUR PolyLab research centre. Major Russian and foreign companies use the Vivilen compounds to manufacture different types of packaging and containers. Going forward, we are planning to expand the Vivilen-branded product range and its applications.
more detailsIn 2021, SIBUR and WOS, the Russian apparel brand, joined forces to launch Russia’s first luxury capsule collection of garments from recycled plastic. The collaboration is a good example of how to breathe new life into polymer waste. The collection was released for limited sale, with the raised funds donated to the Vtoroe Dykhanie foundation to support textile recycling.
SIBUR and the Russian Football Union launched an initiative to collect plastic bottles at training camps and matches of the national team.The initiative started in Kazan on 8 October 2021 with yellow containers for plastic installed at the Kazan Arena during a football match between Russia and Slovakia. On top of that, special bins in the form of goalposts were placed in locker rooms and next to subs benches. More than 6 500 bottles were collected during the game – enough to produce over 400 fan scarves.
In summer 2021, SIBUR teamed up with Higher School of Economics’ Shukhov Lab, an international research laboratory for experimental urban design, to run workshops on plastic recycling and sustainable designing.The project lasted for two weeks. During that time, students invented and made several household items and created an installation artwork, all from recycled plastic. The artwork was later placed in the lobby of AZIMUT Hotel Smolenskaya in Moscow. The household items included decorative cabinet pulls, soap dishes, multi-functional keychain charms that can be used as earphone holders, bag clips or toothpaste squeezers.
This environmental initiative is implemented jointly by SIBUR and AZIMUT Hotels. The hotel chain replaced its toiletries and guest accessories with more sustainable and recyclable alternatives. The collected plastic was sorted and recycled.
Over 10 000 teachers took part in the project, which was recognised as the best environmental awareness raising programme at the Corporate Charity Leaders contest in 2021.
